King Louis XII of France was determined to press his claim on the thrones of Milan and Naples. His ambitions force the spanish intervention to protect the interests of Aragon in Italy. The choosen to stop the french armies would be Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, the Great Captain, who founds the first modern standing army and made Spain the preeminent world military power for almost two centuries.
